About book Wait For Signs: Twelve Longmire Stories (2014)

This book of Walt Longmire short stories turned out to be the perfect Christmas gift because the majority of the stories were originally written as stand-alones sent out by Craig Johnson in his annual holiday newsletter. Johnson knows his characters and Wyoming inside and out, and quickly establishes the characters and settings so each short could stand on its own and be appreciated and understood by those who've never read any of his work. At the same time, the stories add new depth and backstory to Walt, Henry, Vic, Lonnie, "Sancho" Santiago, Cady, Lucian, and the other members of the crew whom fans all know on a first-name basis. I am generally not a big fan of short stories (hence the 4 stars), but this is the only way I can get my Craig Johnson fix until his next full length novel due in May 2015, timed to A&E release of Longmire's next season. As a reader of all of the Longmire novels, I appreciate Johnson's approach to the short stories, using them to fill gaps before and throughout Longmire's life, which in turn enriches the overall series. My favorite of Johnson's characters, Henry Standing Bear, is prominently featured in classic "Bear" fashion and represented in a humble and eloquent introduction by Lou Diamond Phillips, Bear's "other" voice. Cannot wait for Johnson's next Longmire release!
