About book Vodnik (2012)

With this book, I found a new author to watch out for as I read about a part of the world that I'm not familiar with. Tomas' life changes when his family's house burns down and they move to Slovakia where his mother is from. In Slovakia, he begins to understand more about his identity of being a quarter Roma as well as being confused by elements of Slovakian folklore that appear around him. Bryce Moore managed one of the trickiest parts of any good YA and fantasy book, all of the characters feel real, as a reader I discovered a world I didn't know of and wish to go back to. One of the parts I found particularly illuminating was Tomas dealing with his Roma identity which in the United States wasn't a major issue. Instead he had trouble connecting due to his worries about a burn scar on his arm while in Slovakia, the way he's identified changes. This is one of the best descriptions I've read of someone experiencing discrimination and rethinking their world view.I would recommend this book to middle school and high school students especially those who are looking for a fantasy with a different setting. This is also a book I would suggest for someone who's recently moved or gone through a major life transition since the author presents a realistic teenager. The violent aspects of the book come from dealings with horrible people and fire and water, which Tomas learns to confront. I got my copy of the Vodnik at ALA 2013 from the publisher's book and the author signed it for me. Thank you Lee and Low. What a fantastic book!!!I was in the mood for a different book, something that would keep me entertained for a minute while I decided what to read next. I ended up LOVING this book, and wishing there was a sequel. The book keeps you guessing at every turn, is pretty funny, the characters are very likeable, and I found it very easy to relate to them as well. I was worried the folklore and fairy tales would over-power the book and make it too outlandish, but it is perfectly balanced out. If you are even considering reading this book, JUST DO IT. Looking forward to more books from Mr. Moore in the future.
