Relying on photographed puppets fashioned from various materials as well as acrylic paints, the author/illustrator attempts to delve into the essence of Frida Kahlo's unique artwork, and by extension, into the personality of the woman herself. Each of the double-page spreads contains phrases in Spanish and in English as well as symbols or elements that were important in the artist's life and work. In some respects the book feels as though Morales is channeling the essence of Kahlo, something she clearly succeeds in accomplishing. Her respect, admiration, and fascination with Kahlo are clearly displayed on the book's pages. While this is not a definitive biography of Frida since it provides only glimpses of her, it certainly serves to capture her spirit and uniqueness. Those who want to know more about this woman will need to look elsewhere although the afterword provides additional information that explains some of the elements that appear in the book. Despite its possible shortcomings, I thoroughly enjoyed this treatment of an ever-fascinating woman whose life is almost impossible to capture on the page. Viva Frida! Is a distinctly unique picture book. Told in very simple, but powerful, bilingual text, the words and pictures create the essence of Frida Kahlo. This book, though, is NOT a picture book biography. The author's note in the back of the book tells more about Kahlo's life, as well as Morales' connection to the artist. Children who do not know anything (or have limited understanding) about Kahlo will need help to understand this book.The art in this book is detailed, requiring the reader to really search and look at the pictures. They tell a whole story, one that is supported, but not told, by the text. At the beginning and end of the book, the art is done by photographing puppets. In the middle of the book is a dream sequence that is told in acrylic paintings. My first time through this book, I missed the change in medium, and was very confused by the suddenly fantastic images.I love that this is a bilingual book, but it raises one main problem that I have with the book. The English words are written in a bold printed font that is black. The Spanish words are written in a somewhat cursive font that is white, and at times seems almost translucent. Then English words are placed at the bottom of the same Spanish words, overlapping the bottom of the word or phrase. At times it makes it difficult to read the Spanish words. To me it looks like the Spanish is being overpowered by the English. As an educator this creates problems for me. I want my Spanish speaking students to be proud do their language and culture(s), not give them the impression that English is better than Spanish!
