About book Visit Sunny Chernobyl: And Other Adventures In The World's Most Polluted Places (2012)

Each individual chapter in this was fairly interesting - I particularly enjoyed the ones on Canadian & US oil towns. However, all together, one after the other: it gets boring. The latter half is also pulled down by the author's attempt to integrate his personal romantic woes into the narrative of his travels - it would be better if he had not bothered, as they don't constitute a narrative so much as a repeated whine. Not bad but he suffers for a lack of material and his story rambles at times. I found myself skipping many pages of chapters because he lost my interest in that particular area and seemed to just be filling pages. He makes some good points and I'd recommend the chapter on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to everyone because it tells a good, honest story that exposes the nature of the problem on both sides. Yes, it is terrible that there is all this trash in the ocean but the narrative being pushed by activists is far from the truth; there is no island of solid trash and no-one really knows how big it is.

Some of the chapters were a bit too technical/scientific, but overall an interesting read.

Interesting concept and now I don't have to go to any of those places.
