I'm not sure why my expectations were so high for this book. I did not like Ladies Auxiliary, but I loved the premise of Visible City so I figured I'd give it a try. In short, I thought it needed serious editing. Some sections were great, but many others seemed stuck in a rut or completely unbelievable (I lived on the Upper West Side, and went to Georgia's, and found the endless coincidences to be ludicrous). This book left me pissed off for a good couple of days after I read it so it's worth a short note here: Mirvis totally insults her readers by failing to give any of her characters even the most basic resemblance to normal human emotions and motivations. This book was like reading what an alien might write if it had to guess how humans interact with one another based entirely on watching from afar.
Beautifully written - I'd like to reread it. I can't wait for our book club discussion!
