Vince and Joy meet each other on a camp site where they are holidaying with their parents. Joy is 18 and Vince is almost 19 when they meet and they fall madly and completely in love with each other. Joy's parents are in their 60's and Vince's are much younger and trendier. Vince and Joy are made for each other and they spend as much time together, away from their parents, as they can. One night whilst the couple are frolicking in the woods, their parents get into an altercation which ends up in a fight between Joy's dad and Vince's step dad. When Vince and Joy return home that night, all is not well and in the early hours of the morning Joy and her family leave the camp site without saying goodbye. Although Joy leaves a letter for Vince, it is raining heavily and most of the ink on the page gets washed away. All Vince can read in the note is "I am so ashamed". They are both devastated by their loss.Moving on seven years we pick up the story of Vince and Joy again. We meet Vince's room mate, the wonderful Cass and her spiritually inclined cat, Madeleine and Joy's friends, her landlady, Julia and the irrepressible cross dresser, Bella. Without giving too much away it seems that fate guides Vince and Joy to dance around one another but never actually pick up their relationship. Somehow their lives move on in different directions. And this is how it goes into the future until we finally meet the couple again more than 17 years after they first met and fell in love.This was a delightful book to read and I loved the characters, even the kooky ones were well drawn and believable. The story is light hearted but also asks a couple of serious soul searching questions, too. I can thoroughly recommend this for the summer and have now secured my second Lisa Jewell book, 31 Dream Street. I'll keep you posted.

Über all die Jahre kann er sie nicht vergessen, lernt aber, sich auch auf andere Frauen einzulassen.Joy ergeht es ähnlich, jedoch meint das Schicksal es nicht gut mit ihr und so hat sie nicht nur die Trennung ihrer Eltern zu verkraften, sondern auch eine Beziehung, in der sie nicht sie selbst sein darf.Nach Jahren sehen sie sich zufällig wieder, aber auch da ist kein Happy End in Sicht.Es scheint, als würde das Schicksal nicht auf ihrer Seite sein.Lisa Jewell hat mit „Wo immer Du sein magst“ einen wunderschönen Roman geschrieben, der einen von Anfang an berührt.Die Geschichte wird abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Vince und Joy erzählt und der Leser bekommt einen nahezu perfekten Einblick in ihre Gefühlswelt. Man leidet und freut sich mit ihnen und lernt sie, durch die detaillierten Beschreibungen der Autorin, sehr genau kennen.Doch leider sind diese genauen Beschreibungen auch oft sehr langatmig. Auch das Ende wurde ein wenig lieblos geschrieben und endete abrupt.Trotz dieser Kritikpunkte ist „Wo immer du sein magst“ ein wunderschönes Buch, dass die perfekte Urlaubslektüre ist.Lesen und genießen.

A great premise with a not so great execution. Two passive protagonists leading a boring life but doing nothing to change it. This book is not so much about missed chances and fate, as it is about two people too bored to grab an opportunity and change their lives.This book is not so bad, but not that great either. Maybe the author wanted to drive home the point that Vince & Joy can never be happy unless they were with each other. But living a bland life and letting all those 'fate brings us together' moments pass away doesn't make them likeable. The side characters were way more interesting than the protagonists.Maybe this was supposed to be serious realistic romance with a touch of humor. Maybe I shouldn't have expected this book to have sappy romance. Maybe I shouldn't have expected the 'fate brings us together' moments to be sparkling & great. But everything added up to be a great disappointment. I can't believe this is the same book that keep me awake all night during the first few chapters.

I have been a fan of Lisa Jewell since I came across "Ralph's Party" in a bookstore when I was going away on vacation. I love Jewell's style and the story flows so naturally, however, "Vince and Joy" was something of a bitter disappointment. I had it brought to me from the UK specially and was disappointed by a slow development to a rather obvious story. Normally Jewell writes her book around a number of central characters whose stories all eventually interlink in exciting and surprising twists, but this one was just the two main characters going through rather depressing life events until the inevitable happens and then the book ends! Such a shame, it really had the opportunity to be a beautiful love story from a very talented author, but it falls short on all levels.

Az elmúlt hónapokban olvastam pár romantikus könyvet, de ez messze viszi a pálmát! Nem túl sok, nem túl kevés..pont jó. Vince és Joy története igazán erős, az írónő a karaktereket nagyon jól megválasztotta és elsősorban megírta.Tényleg igaz, amit a leírásban olvastam a könyvről; életszerű. Valahogy úgy éreztem, hogy ilyen biztos már előfordult a világban nem is egyszer. Persze voltak benne olyan dolgok, amik valószínűleg nem így történnek, de ez fikció. Nem tudok kivetnivalót találni a karakterek leírásában, mert mindegyik valamiért egyedi, nem klisés. Kedvenc karakterem George volt azt hiszem, mert tökéletesen éreztette velem az írónő, ahogy egyre jobban megváltozik a hangulata majd az egész jelleme. Joy, aki vad tinédzserből érett nő lett, aki keresi helyét, és csak boldogulni akar az életben; nagyon tetszett. Vince hála nem az a tipikus karakter lett, mint amire az olvasó számítana. Én is hálát adtam, hogy nem az a "macsó" beállítású pasas lett. Cass...a közepén megijedtem, hogy csak úgy hirtelen eltűnt, ahogy Vince kiköltözött a házból, de szerencsére a legvégén visszajött egy pár oldalnyi szereplésre! Szerintem bájos teremtés volt, persze ne feledjük el a macskát, ami azért az egész történet felelőse volt valamilyen szinten :)
