About book Vida Nueva (1901)

An enchanting masterpiece about courtly love by the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri that is filled with love and sublime emotions! The book is a combination of prose and verse in which Dante expresses and tells about his great love to the graceful Beatrice Portinari. The book includes many sonnets and canzoni and a ballad, in addition to prose. Dante talks about his encounters with Beatrice, which formed a ‘new life’ (vita nuova) to him, then he describes his happiness and joyful feelings and emotions, stirred by encountering and thinking of his beloved Beatrice, and the pain her death caused him to feel. Although the book is a translated version (by Mark Musa), the language, words, and images were fascinating. I particularly loved Dante’s description of the effects of love on him, his inner world, his life, and his works as a poet. A great book that is enchanting in its style and structure, which provides a pleasurable experience; and it is important to read it before starting the Divine Comedy in order to get better understanding of the Comedy, especially, the sublime role Beatrice plays to help Dante in his spiritual journey.
