In Vertical there are profound revelations about how the past shapes an identity that the the fickelness of Fortune cannot dislodge. It is also a beautiful homage to the dignity of human life and the possibilities of more to follow. Thank you Rex Pickett for the beautiful story, the wonderful characters, yes a bachanellian roller coster ride, and a poignant lesson for those of us over 40 about embracing who we are, where we come from, where we are headed, and the great beyond. This novel will stick with me for a long time. It’s hard to follow up Sideways. Wait--hard? Maybe impossible.Pickett is doing a fantastic job of keeping Miles and Jack familiar in their new life role reversals. This is what I appreciate. The temptation would have been to reinvent characters whom readers fell in love with, but he didn’t. He gave them a new mission and motive for their trip.The beginning was seductive, and I found myself laughing out loud, but spang in the middle of the book I am feeling winded. It’s slowing down to a crawl right now. We’ll see how it goes from here.
