Podziemia Veniss to książka składająca się z dwóch części – zasadniczej powieści oraz noweli Wojna Balzaka – których akcja umiejscowiona jest w tym samym uniwersum. Czytelnikom "Podziemi Veniss" odradza się przyjmowanie podczas lektury środków halucynogennych. Nie będą potrzebne. – głosi zamieszczony z tyłu okładki tekst Richarda Morgana. Wystarczy lektura kilku pierwszych stron, by przekonać się o prawdziwości tych słów.Veniss – futurystyczne miasto, które oprócz głównego, nadziemnego poziomu, ciągnie się ponad trzydzieści poziomów w dół. Miasto, którego nazwa jest słowem przypominającym syk żmii – jak twierdzi jeden z głównych bohaterów – istoty zabójczej i nieprzewidywalnej. Miejsce, w którym przekraczanie granic między dzielnicami i poziomami wymaga specjalnej przepustki sprawdzanej przez wyglądające na żywcem wyjęte z kreskówki rozumne surykatki oraz ganesze – niebieskie słoniki pełniące funkcje policji i straży. Oto surrealistyczna rzeczywistość, w której ludzie rodzą się w kadziach, a dzieci bawią zestawami małego bioinżynieria, pozwalającymi na tworzenie powykręcanych i sprzecznych z naturą stworzeń, dla których samo istnienie jest bólem.Przez pozornie pozbawione znaczenia zdarzenie trójka bohaterów – holoartysta Nicholas, jego siostra Nicola oraz pochodzący z podziemi Shadrach – zostaje wplątana w mroczną intrygę, od której zależeć mogą nawet losy miasta. Najpierw jednak jedno z nich będzie musiało odpowiedzieć sobie na uniwersalne pytania: czy można przedłożyć dobro jednego człowieka i osobistą zemstę nad dobro ogółu – i czy ogół ten w ogóle na cokolwiek zasługuje.Stworzona przez VanderMeera rzeczywistość jest obskurna, odrażająca i pełna szaleństwa. Wyraźnie widoczne są w niej inspiracje Salvadorem Dali – nawet surykatka została nazwana na jego cześć. Wędrówka przez kolejne podziemne poziomy miasta, napotkane tam istoty oraz rozgrywające się wydarzenia sprawiają, że w czasie lektury momentami naprawdę cierpnie skóra, czytelnik zaś nawet po zamknięciu książki czuje niemal fizycznie oblepiający go brud i szaleństwo Veniss. Autor wykazał się niebywałym kunsztem literackim, tworząc przemawiający do wyobraźni świat, w którym za pomocą słów można się dosłownie zanurzyć. Niebanalne metafory, plastyczne opisy, a nawet zastosowanie różnych typów narracji w zależności od bohatera, którego historia staje się centrum wydarzeń, w tym rzadko spotykanej w literaturze narracji drugooosobowej – wszystkie te zabiegi sprawiają, że mamy do czynienia z fantastyką niepoślednią nie tylko pod względem treści, lecz również formy. Sam pisarz w posłowiu pisze o niej: "Podziemia Veniss" są nieposkromienie dekadencką, fantasmagoryczną powieścią – i chyba trudno o lepsze podsumowanie.Zasadniczą część uznać można za przepyszny tort, a nowelę Wojna Balzaka za przysłowiową wisienkę, która jednak zamiast dodawać smaku, daje uczucie przesytu i lekkich mdłości z przejedzenia. Choć dorównuje głównemu dziełu zarówno pod względem kreacji świata, jak i stylistycznym, w żaden sposób nie wzbogaca historii ani nie uzupełnia jej o wątki, których czytelnik mógłby wyczekiwać po ukończeniu głównej części dzieła. This is one of those books that you can't put down once you start it. You get sucked in immediately and as things unfold throughout the book, you can't stop reading. I would recommend it for readers who like sci-fi & don't mind some graphic (ick) scenes. And I also recommend it for anyone looking for a new reading experience. Brief (and I mean brief) plot summarySet very much in the future, the story is set in the city of Veniss, which used to be known as Dayton Central, until the government collapsed and then its inhabitants "started calling it Veniss -- like an adder's hiss, deadly and unpredictable." (11). Nick is an artist who does living art, but the tools of his trade were stolen & he couldn't afford to replace them. He decides to call upon one Mr. Quin, whose realm is the underground. To get there & to get an introduction, he goes to his friend Shadrach, who tells him exactly what to do when he gets there & how to deal with Quin, after having warning Nick not to do it. Shadrach works for Quin and spent much of his life underground, so he makes Nick promise he will follow his instructions to the letter. But as the weeks go by, and Nick's sister Nicola hasn't heard from Nick, she begins to get worried & starts investigating on her own. This, of course, gets her involved in Nick's problems and as a result some of her own. Shadrach, who is in love with Nicola, then goes to help Nicola. That's the nutshell version. What really makes this book, though, is not so much the plot, but the incredibly vivid imagery of life in the future in the city of Veniss, both above and underground. It is a world where ganeshas (you know, the Hindu gods with many arms that look like elephants) work as security guards & messengers and meerkats 4 feet tall also fulfill different functions among the humans. And in Shadrach's quest underground to find Quin, the images are astounding. It's almost like reading Dante's Inferno where at every level & at every step along the journey there is always something new & intriguing to witness. Furthermore, even though the weird creatures think and act and speak English, you just get to a point while reading where you accept that this could be plausible, as Vandermeer makes this unreality so incredibly real for the reader. I would definitely recommend this to readers who wish to put in the time...believe me, you'll want to go over this one again. I did.
Do You like book Veniss Underground (2005)?
Pierwszą twórczością Jeffa VanderMeera którą przeczytałem był cały cykl "Ambergris". Bardzo mi się podobał ten świat, później sięgnąłem po twórczość z 2014 roku "Southern Reach", która kompletnie mnie zniechęciła do tego autora. Czytając jego biografię zobaczyłem, że napisał wcześniej książkę "Podziemia Veniss". Myślę sobie, stare to, starsze od Ambergris i "Southern Reach" więc za dobre nie może być. Jednak było!!! Przebiło Southern Reach o 10 razy!! Ambergris nie, ale i tak super. A o czym jest książka? Jeżeli ktoś lubi hard SF, modyfikacje genów, piekło Dantego i podobne klimaty to jak najbardziej polecam. Mimo dekady książka trzyma poziom.

L’umanità vive in città stato fortificate e isolate l’una dalle altre, i bambini figli dell’ingegneria genetica vengono estratti da uteri artificiali e il talento degli Artisti Viventi crea nuove forme di vita, i meerkat, servitori degli esseri umani…o una nuova forma di evoluzione? Alla scomparsa del fratello gemello Nicholas, un artista di ologrammi con l’ambizione, ma non il talento, di diventare un Artista Vivente, Nicola chiede aiuto a Shadrach suo ex-amante, il quale scoprirà ben presto che anche la sua amata è scomparsa, mentre alcuni suoi organi sono stati innestati in una ricca ed anziana signora. Senza alcuna esitazione Shadrach scenderà nella città sotterranea, dalla quale lui stesso proviene, non solo per salvare Nicola ma per soddisfare la sua sete di vendetta nei confronti di Quin, il più grande degli Artisti Viventi, ma anche la causa della sparizione dei due gemelli.Accompagnato dalla testa di un meekart di Quin chiamato Giovanni Il Battista e poi da una creatura di nome Gollux - “Based on an ancient design from a fairy tale” - Shadrach sprofonderà di livello in livello in un susseguirsi di orrori. Code di esseri umani orrendamente mutilati pronti a donare ciò che rimane dei loro organi; l’oscurità totale dei tunnel dove abitavano i minatori (come i genitori di Shadrach) ora sostituiti da meekart e “psicostreghe” in grado di entrare nella mente delle persone per leggere i pensieri al momento della morte; il livello dei rifiuti dove una Intelligenza Artificiale si è trasformata in una bestia che macina la spazzatura tra eruzioni e rumore e dove vive un Nicola orrendamente devastato esso stesso divenuto un rifiuto. Infine nel livello più profondo della città sotterranea: il regno di Quin. Quin is: the man living in the belly of a giant fish who remakes the world in his own image but is trapped in its jaws. Stilisticamente il romanzo è diviso in tre parti ciascuna dedicata a uno dei tre protagonisti. Si apre con Nicholas che racconta i prima persona come è entrato in contatto con Quin. Si prosegue con Nicola che “viene raccontata” - "You. Were. Always. Two. As one: Nicola and Nicholas, merging into the collective memory together, so that in the beginning of a sentence spoken by your brother you knew the shadow of its end and mouthed the words before he said them" – mettendola così al centro dell’attenzione. E si termina con le tribolazioni di Shadrach narrate in terza persona. Veniss Underground si trova a metà strada tra Perdido Street Station di China Miéville e il fumetto Blame di Tsutomu Nihei. Insieme ai personaggi anche la città è protagonista di questo romanzo. Sotto il cielo i grattacieli altissimi si ergono e specchiano nei canali d’acqua, tra le vie gente normale che si incontra nei caffè o lavora per società altamente tecnologiche. Sottoterra un claustrofobico e affollato labirinto di passaggi e tunnel abitato da creature meravigliosamente orrende.

All was flesh and weirdness in Veniss Underground. Unexpected goresque sections for me, mixed up with some brilliant and hilarious humor spots. Reading this stuff makes me wonder what's in Vandermeer's head. The best was the brilliant structure into three parts (being my favourite the whole chapters into Nicola's place). It does not get 5 stars though, because of this strong feeling I had, of imprecision, around the whole story. The constant trip of the protagonist did not let me get more details about the amazing world he was getting into. Just a slight outline of the true Veniss inside the author's mind.
