I have mixed feelings on this book. I really, really liked the idea and the setup. The light blades, the demons, the mixed race...great ideas. Excellent execution, too. I really didn't like the romance, though. It felt a lot like insta-love, and though I can appreciate from the standpoint of 'learning that someone different from you is not evil', it just seemed heavy handed and overdone. The overall story, though, is really excellent. The author has a good tale here and tells it well. The background on both sides is interesting, and I really liked the politics an struggles that the human society goes through. I have to say that this book succeeds in being a fun read in spite of the romance, not because of it. That said, if you're a fan of out-of-the box fantasy, this is a good, quick read and definitely enjoyable if you overlook the poorly executed romance. The female is an outcast half bred but more human then her clan as she uses her healing abilities to help the imprisoned men in the dungeons. The male is one of these prisoners and though he doesn't trust her and his people hate her kind, he brings her with him as he escapes and vows to protect her. Very nice book. Fantasy elements merged perfectly with the romance creating an equal balance between the two.
