About book Vegetable Literacy: Cooking And Gardening With Twelve Families From The Edible Plant Kingdom (2013)
If you get excited about vegetables, their cultivation, nutrition, and preparation, this book is porn. I have tried several of the recipes and they were all delicious. But what I loved about the book was just reading about the different plant families and the author's anecdotes about her experience with the vegetables. Deborah Madison is a great writer who can captivate an interested reader with her tales about broccoli, fennel, and eggplant. Is there a law that cookbooks must weigh more than five pounds? The book was fascinating, but definitely full of things that are hard-to-find in my village. Quelites. Epazote. Frikeh. Persimmons. The organization of the book, along plant family lines, set it apart from other cookbooks; this is as much as book for the gardener as for the cook. I loved reading it. I just can't see myself cooking from it very often. Glad it was a library loan and not a personal $40 purchase.
