About book Undeadly (2012)

This novel was perhaps not a stunning example of English literature but the overall story was enjoyable and I would be interested to read a sequel. I think it would be a decent book for a younger reader who struggles with slow moving stories as it does maintain a fast pace. However the book does have its flaws:Flaw 1:Unreasonable timeline for events, once Molly joins Nekyia we are told she has a hard first week, this is then followed by what most would interpret as a second week of school however we then seem to jump back in time and it's only just Friday. Additionally the number of events crammed into this single week also seems unreasonable. Flaw 2:Grammar and spelling. Now I'm no editor and yes the book is written from a teenage perspective and that's fine but when it's easy to pick out spelling mistakes and words in the wrong parts of sentences, and it increases in number the later in the book you get I have to wonder if the editors and publishers read the whole novel. Flaw 3:Rushed and confusing jumping around the main plotline. Now I can't elaborate here too much without giving things away but in the last half of the book some events are really mashed together and the transitions to them are poor at best. For example the worst is when Molly is talking to one person and then without being clear it switches to a completely different person and totally new event mid para. It also seems to me as if the last part of the book was hurriedly put together as this is where it begins to fall down the most.So enough on flaws, let's consider predictability, overall I found the novel quite a refreshing change in the YA genre, however that was to do with the content, necromancy and ancient Egyptians hasn't really been a commonly matched theme, and the directions it could be taken really have potential. That being said the plotline follows the same trend as most other YA paranormal novels, key elements: kid finds out they have some kind of unusual power, always a big hidden secret about familial relations, kid goes to special school for people just like them, love triangle, mean girls (likely to be best friend in future), hangs out with dorkier kids at school, has some big mystery to solve, kicks paranormal butt, almost everyone is grateful, almost:... All that aside it was a quick and entertaining read, I most enjoyed Molly's character voice highly entertaining, I also enjoyed the reaper diary sections. I think there is a lot of potential here for improvement and a great second book. This book held great promise just based upon its description and my love of all things ancient Egyptian. Unfortunately, the author did not deliver. The narration (or more specifically the narrator herself) was so irritating that I found it impossible to force myself past page 35. I never finished this book and I intend to trade it in at a used book store at my earliest convenience. If you are looking for something well-written and engrossing that incorporates Egyptian mythos, try Rick Riordan's "The Red Pyramid". "Undeadly" is not the book you are looking for!
