About book Unapologetic: Why, Despite Everything, Christianity Can Still Make Surprising Emotional Sense (2012)
This is a book you need to keep reading. The first 4 chapters are quite hard going at times, and I was a little surprised at the more than occasional use of swear words, but this is not a pious book. It is written to trigger your own thinking process. Once I was over the difficult beginnings, I kept reading ;I was drawn back to this book, and I could then understand why the book was structured in this way, rather than having the 'nice and easy stuff' at the beginning. Unusually for me, I will be reading this book again after lending it to a few friends who I know will benefit from a challenge to their understanding of the faith we share. In general I like the idea of the importance of emotion in considering the veracity of Christian faith. Spufford does a good job of showing just how emotion is involved - for both believer and unbeliever - in the process of faith.What is slightly ironic is the fact that he spends so much time arguing about a wide variety of topic. Because at the end of the day, Christianity is about us as whole person - enfleshed souls -with reason, emotions, and will. The process of coming to, or rejecting faith involves all of it.Nevertheless, Spufford, has writen a useful book. Many of the people you know who have rejected Christianity have done so because of basic emotional reasons, and Spufford will help them understand that process, whether that change their minds or not.Oh, yeah, I should warn you: he swears -- a lot!
