I bought this book because my gaze fell on its cover and I immediately felt there was a connection.I started reading this book not quite knowing if I had made the best choice: I was suspicious and the short summary on the paperback did not actually appeal me.after the first 20 pages I thanked my instinct for having me buying Torday's novel: to put it shortly, after having adjusted to the writing style, I could not tear my eyes from it. what I enjoyed most was the style and the suspense, for towards the end I was so into the story that I literally missed my bus stop so much that I was intrigued by it.it was quite an experience, although I am not sure I appreciated the supernatural nature of some elements of the story: being myself a hardcore Sherlock Holmes fan, I found it hard understanding and accepting them, and I somehow wished that the end of the story could have brought some more light on them.nonetheless I cannot say that it was not good and I will probably be reading more from this author I must admit I was slightly disappointed with Salmon Fishing.... and so never bothered trying anything else by this author. However members of my reading group raved about this one and I guess that's the beauty of a reading group - getting you to try books you might otherwise pass over. Some children go missing, the police aren't connecting them, some very amateur sleuths take up the investigation and driven by mysterious dreams and subconscious messages they identify the abductor.The style isn't for everyone, written entirely in the present tense, even when telling back story. The sentences are shorty and choppy which can take some getting used to. However the plot is a clever one and the spiritual/supernatural edge gives it added intrigue. Some parts seem a little far-fetched but then they say truth is stranger than fiction so who knows how many real life cases there are that have secrets like this one.
