About book Un Sentiment Plus Fort Que La Trahison (2013)
I thought the author did a really good job of showing the effects of marital betrayal as well as allowing the reader to have some sympathy with the relationship between the adulterous couple whose deaths (whilst running from their respective marriages) starts the action of the book. It was also interesting to have one spouse angry and hurt from a marriage that they knew to be inadequate and flawed and the other coming to terms with a marriage, and a wife, that was not what they thought. The sifting through of these complex dynamics was done well and was convincing and helped set up the romance between Sebastian and Leah. There were also some really nice additional character touches - like the exchange with Leah's father-in-law just before he cuts her out of his life and accelerates her social decline. It was knowing and human and inhuman at the same time. I didn't fully buy in to the house party idea, which is the reason I haven't given the book 5 stars but apart from that minor/major objection to the plot I thought this was a wonderfully satisfying emotional journey that demands a bit more from the reader than is usual. I have been reading a LOT of books lately. I am feeling a bit reviewed out when I read so much (yay vacation!!). So...short? Eh, we will see. These two have already loved and lost. Sebastian's wife died in a carriage accident (oh those carriage accidents!) and she was with another man. *gasps* He spun some lies at once. That man was Leah's husband and she sadly knew about the affair. It did not make her happy knowing. Now she wants to live and he wants her to calm down. A widow has can't be merry.I liked Leah. She wanted to live, to be free and the more I got to know her the more I understood. Sebastian just wanted to protect his wife's reputation and their son's. So he tries to keep her in check, but then he can't stop thinking of her. They both have to come to terms with what they know. And learn to love and live again. I do think they were a great fit in the end.A nice story.
