Darya is Mina’s mother. She has tried to keep up certain Persian traditions while living in the US. Mina, on the other hand, is trying to respect her mother but live the life of a young single American woman. Darya now thinks she has found the perfect match for Mina who, at 25, is becoming somewhat an embarrassment to Darya. Mina should be married by now! After rejecting what Darya thinks is the “perfect match according to horoscopes and all signs” Darya almost gives up. She decides to take Mina on a visit to Iran in an attempt to reconnect with her culture. We had the good fortune to have the author speak during our book group discussion. While I initially found the story to be a light/simple read, Marjan's perspective provided a depth and background that was amazing. I so appreciated the expanded understanding to the 1979 hostage crisis as well as the current state of affairs in Iran. In addition, Mina's character reflects a reality that is very common these days, for young people whose parents have emigrated from so many different cultures. Thought-provoking indeed.
