This is a very interesting book by Maureen Stanton, who, over the course of 10 years or so, shadowed 'Curtis Avery' (a pseudonym), an antiques dealer. If you have ever flea-marketed, or even visited a Goodwill store, you will enjoy this book. Antique dealers very rarely make a lot of money, but they sure enjoy what they do. From muddy fields, and hot July weekends, I felt the sweat drip from my brow looking for that certain treasure...A very informative book. Well reported and comprehensive account of the antiques dealer world. She covers all angles of the industry, from fakes to reproductions, declining interest in early Americana to the rise of post-war collectibles.But I feel she lost journalistic credibility with her over-the-top adoration of her main subject, "Curt Avery." She paints him as salt of the earth working man, while I saw him as a sloppy, slimy character.
