Apparently no one gets married anymore they just move-in together. I'm still kind of annoyed the Yuki thing is such a...non thing.Ok, so I do like the change of scenery. Kind of fun to see Randy try to handle responsibility. Poop is a funny concept, and I like the idea of Monk getting a love interest... but not sure I like the owner that much. Jury is out on her.I miss Benji so much...here was the perfect chance to bring him back in and nope he'd off doing the Europe thing.Parts of this felt a bit sloppy (like Monk firing his weapon to see if someone is home...seriously?). The Murder Alibi thing was already done in a fairly significant episode, so it was kind of lame to see it rehashed. I was proud of myself for figuring out the burglars from the clues, and not just my knowledge of story conventions. My dad would call that a "true mystery" where the necessary clues are actually presented in the story if you can spot them.I'm torn about Natalie...I think it's interesting to see her try to grow, but a cop, really? It feels more like something she's doing because that's what the people around here do, rather than a true calling.Ah the cliffhanger...honestly it would rather suck if they stayed in Summit. It's a boring little, yuppie town, and if Monk moves in it will create Cabot Cove syndrome, only with less charming neighbors. Also Randy has long been a least favorite character. I liked Sharonna a lot in the TV series, but don't think the book quite captures her charm. She had a soft side that balanced out that tough, Jersey girl attitude. I have major issue with her drugging Monk's drink without even discussing the option with him. I had major issue with Monk drugging Ambrose too. For those familiar with the TV series of the same name, you know how funny the character of Monk can be without knowing it. The same is true in the novel. Here Mr. Monk and his trusty assistant (Natalie) in all things a detective needs and a hypochondriac, too, are whisked off to Summit, New Jersey by Sharona his former assistant of long ago. The scenes describing getting him from San Francisco to New Jersey are hilarious. Once in Summit, the current police chief and acting mayor (a close friend from San Francisco and Sharona's live-in mate) makes them temporary police officers to help him clean up the burgularies and eventual murder. Given a gun, Monk wants to shoot everyone he believes is not obeying the law. Given the police car to drive, Natalie wants to use the siren and lights to go two blocks. From lining up the cars on the streets by color and make, and seeing that they are parked precisely the same distance apart, to encountering a lovely woman who runs a shop called Poop, to tracing the murderer and preventing another murder, this book makes you eagerly await the next one in the series.

Not amazing or highly recommended, but a pleasant diversion especially if you are a fan of the show.
