About book Two Kisses For Maddy: A Memoir Of Loss And Love (2011)
Two Kisses for Maddy, a memoir by Matthew Logelin was written about the birth of his daughter followed by the death of his wife. This is a heartbreaking loss at a moment in life when the world should be full of possibilities. My heart goes out to both of them. Logelin had started a blog to keep family informed on the progression of a difficult pregnancy. He continued it as an outlet for his grief and the overwhelming responsibility of being a single parent of a premature baby. The blog attracted lots of followers including single parents and widows/widowers who were drawn to the honesty and raw emotion Logelin shared. As a book, the narrative became a little repetitive. A shorter version would have been crisper. Why read about a 30 year old woman dying from complications of childbirth, just 3 weeks prior to the due date of my own child? I don't know why. Nonetheless, I generally liked the book. The author is a decently talented, considering that he's not actually an author but rather a computer geek (employed by yahoo). Yes, he swears gratuitously, and yes he brags extensively about his taste in somewhat obscure indie music (BTW, I checked out some of the songs he raved about, and found them rather dull). The writing style wasn't powerful enough to render this read a bona fide tearjerker, but learning of this family's tragedy and slow recovery did make me consciously grateful for my own healthy pregnancy. RIP, Liz Logelin, and I do wish Maddy and Matthew all the best.
