About book Twixt Firelight And Water (2011)

Fast-paced and poignant, "Twixt Firelight and Water" gripped me till me the end of the meagre number of pages. In contrast to Marillier's trilogy, this narrative is a short story. Thus, every word, every sentence is used effectively to develop the plot. Conri is the eldest son of Lady Oonagh, the antagonistic sorceress of the Severwaters trilogy. He is punished for his acts of bravery and love for his younger brother Ciaran, and only through another feat of bravery many years later is he saved. "Twixt" aptly answers all the questions readers have been itching to ask since the beginning of the series and we have been greatly awarded for our steady loyalty to the series and lovely Marillier. If only there could be a longer book! I'm not a big fan of short stories. I've read more mediocre short stories than really good ones and this probably has clouded my perception on the entire genre. So when a short story threatens to take my heart and turn it inside out, I am going to notice. It definitely takes a certain amount of talent to write anything particularly meaningful in such a short amount of words. But Twixt Firelight and Water is one such story that makes you believe in love lost, filial loyalty, difficult endings and magical beginnings. I admit I was very close to shedding tears for Conri's story because it was so beautifully written. My biggest gripe (as with all short stories) is that it's far too short. I only wished Marillier had taken their story and turn it into a full feature book. There's so much richness in their story that's just begging to be told and honestly Twixt Firelight and Water is only scratching the surface of their story.

Fills in a few interesting gaps in the tales of Sevenwaters -- wonderfully.
