About book Twelve Kinds Of Ice (2012)

Twelve Kinds of Ice is a delightfully sweet book which will be adored by all adults who were raised in northern areas where they could skate in the winter. The text is sweet yet complex, and the black and white pen illustrations by Barbara McClintock are wonderful. The only problem is that this book will not be as admired by today's children. A parent may entice a girl, who loves to ice skate, to read this book but otherwise its old fashioned appearance will not be attractive to today's children. What a shame as this book is certainly a sweet one and brought wonderful memories back to me. My rating has been adjusted to reflect the book's appeal to the children which it is aimed. This book made me want to move to Maine (or somewhere similar) so that my future children can have the kind of childhood portrayed here. It builds anticipation that only a child can have in preparing for snow and ice. Each stage of waiting makes you more and more eager for skating, hockey, bonfires, hot cocoa, and marshmallows. It is wonderfully detailed and evokes a spirit of exploration. This story is beautifully written and illustrated and highly recommended for a family read aloud, preferably before taking a first time trip to the rink or slope.
