An interesting take on the idea of revolution, the power of family and ghosts. I liked the use of magic and how it takes a tole on the user. the book is more inspired by the middle east and Asian cultures which is a nice change. I also liked how woman and men in the book both held equal status in many cases, officers and soldiers were just as often woman then men. I will defiantly pick up the next one in this series. Overall the book is pretty good. I'm a big fantasy reader and this was a good one in my opinion. My only real problem was in the first part of the book where there are so many names. It was hard to keep up with it at first. However you get used to it and know the characters by the second half. What really makes tho book so amazing however is the main character, Illsyt, was done amazingly. And she made me want to read this book. Though the side characters definitely helped flush it out. Asheris was a good addition to show another side of Illsyt. Definitely a good debut novel for Amanda Downum. Think I'm going to go read the 2nd one now.
