About book Tokyo On Foot: Travels In The City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods (2011)

I don't typically find myself drawn to travel journal comics, but I picked this up on a whim as it crossed the circulation desk one day and I immediately knew I'd like it. The drawings are exquisite - full of detail and humor. I could look at them all day. And the combination of hand-drawn maps, realistic illustrations, and caricatures creates a surprisingly rich look at a city. His tone is wry and full of wonder, but never condescending or mocking. This book was such a joy to read. I'm astounded that he hasn't had dozens of books published. I wonder if the author deliberately avoided the red light stuff (sex shops are aplenty and quite a strong culture) or chose to omit from publication. And vending machines. Tokyo has the most fascinating vending machines in the world! Nonetheless; one of the best books ever. Can't really categorize this. It's too unique and definitely a must have especially if you value books written through first-person encounters... ok, weird way of putting it but yeah. All of the above are IMO and please don't get offended or take it too personally! I really loved this book!
