I do not ordinarily gravitate to stories set during the Civil War and/or the Antebellum Southr; however, I did not mind the setting in this one. I really enjoyed the story, thought it was well written, liked the characters, didn't think the Christian angle was overdone, and HAD looked forward to the second books, hoping it would follow Ridley and Olivia's story, BUT IT DOESN'T! AARGH!The thing that dropped the rating from a straight 5-star rating to 4 was that I did not believe that Olivia and Ridley, in the South in that day and age, could have had that level of association with the former slaves without more serious repercussions. I really enjoyed this book. It is set at a southern plantation, Belle Meade.The characters are well developed and likable. While this is a book offiction, the background is true as I have visited the Belle Meade mansiona few times here in Nashville. Tours daily. The time period was during andafter the Civil War. Raising and breeding race horses made this plantation prosperous. The romantic attraction between a guest of the plantation and a stablehand who happened to have fought for the Union, made forvery interesting reading. It is a must read!
