About book This Momentary Marriage: A Parable Of Permanence (2009)
What a great, Gospel saturated book on marriage! I learned several valuable things about marriage from the perspective of the Gospel and how it infiltrates every part of our lives. The Gospel not only opened my eyes to my sinful, hell-bound state and need for Christ, but it daily humbles me so that I might pursue righteousness each day because Christ gave it all not so that I could continue in sin, but so that I could flee from it and pursue Him. This could be a great book for use in a small group focusing on marriage topics. Listened on iPod. I never thought marriage could be used/seen in this form, and God is showing me so much today. John Piper’s This Momentary Marriage gave me a pivotal change in my mindset of how love/marriage is looked upon in biblical terms. This is what he said in one of the chapters which struck a new chord within me.He cited Paul who makes the point most clearly that marriage is designed to be the display of God. In Ephesians 5:31-32, he quotes Genesis 2:24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Piper refers this to Christ and the church; the covenant involved in leaving mother and father and holding fast to a spouse and becoming one flesh is a portrayal of the covenant between Christ and his church.Marriage is patterned after Christ’s covenant relationship to his redeemed people, the church. And therefore, the highest meaning and the most ultimate purpose of marriage is to put the covenant relationship of Christ and his church on display. That is why marriage exists.Oh golly. As a follower of Christ today, I can imagine how devastatingly heartbreaking it would be to break this covenant because it is to imply that Christ breaks away from the church which is blasphemy la!I really take my hat off to all the Christian married couples out there because it is a super super remarkable responsibility to be upholding. You guys are displaying the sacred covenant between Jesus Christ and the church! I can’t imagine doing what you all are. So please do it well.

An excellent, deeply Biblical theology of what marriage is and should be.
