I have never watched the tv reality show "Growing Up Gotti." After watching Victoria Gotti on "The Apprentice" I grew curious about this so-called mafia princess. She marked herself as an author so I decided to give her story a read. I was struck by the fact that Victoria is anything but a mafia princess. Yes, her father,uncles and brother have all been involved in "the life," but the hardships that this woman goes through are enough to open your eyes on the true Victoria. She starts at the beginning and goes to the end in quite a fashion. The story is one you can't put down. She has her readers wanting more of her story as every chapter ends. In the end she taught me a lot about the mafia and what it really is like to have family involve in "the life." She also taught me a lot about what it means to be a family and even during some of the toughest choices we have to make in life it is our family who is there to guide us and help us along the way. This woman is far from being any princess! She may live a different life from most and may have made some choices that would make many religious people cringe. But she came through with her family by herside. I found myself seeing how different and similar many of us are to Victoria and the life she has lived. Life didn't give Victoria a picnic in the park, but the choice to become an author instead of a mafia princess was by far a great one in my opinion. Wow, what a page-turner! Don't be deceived into thinking this is a poorly written attempt at a novel. Victoria is actually a gifted, smart writer with journalism creds (albeit from sensational tabloids Star and The NY Post); she knows her Mafia world and will go down as a lady forever fighting for her family's innocence. One thing's for sure: Gotti's sure know how to weave their own seedy stories in their favor. I found this gem at our local dollar store and am so glad I decided to check it out from the library. I will definitely pursue more of her work and look forward to making her classic lasagna from her cooking book.
