About book Thirty Rooms To Hide In: Insanity, Addiction, And Rock 'n' Roll In The Shadow Of The Mayo Clinic (2000)

My family is from Rochester and my dad is a surgeon. As my parents grew up there around the Sullivan boys, I thought this would be an interesting look into the area at the time. While Dr. Sullivan's decline into alcoholism and abuse is an obviously depressing story, the author (his son, no less) manages to imbue this with many comic stories of growing up with 5 brothers and includes many stories that made me laugh out loud to balance the more unsavory and depressing tales. He was very candid and wrote well. I could not put this book down. Very riveting in the details of what it was like growing up in a household controlled by an alcoholic/mentally ill father. The wife/mother of 6 sons dealt with the situation, in a way that was prescribed by the times, 1950-1960's. The 6 sons tried living as normal a life as possible. Luke provided details that were at times as hilarious, as they were heart wrenching. On a side note, I first heard about this book, from the pro basketball player, Kobe Bryant. He recommended it on his Facebook page. Very glad I happened to read that post.
