About book Thinblade (2011)

I almost didn't get past the first chapter of this book. With the exception of the main character, the characters are 2 dimensional. That and the rudimentary narrative almost lost me. The action kept me interested enough though to continue the book though, but there really needs to be more development for the supporting characters. Also, everyone seems to be either pure good or pure evil - again, with one notable exception, there seems to be no middle ground. I'm afraid that this exception may have tipped the author's hand, and foreshadowed a key point about the outcome of the story. Another frustrating thing about the author's style is his tendency to have characters retell parts of the story to other characters. All of that said, the book kept me interested enough to purchase the second volume of the series. Alright, but I was expecting a lot more from the reviews and recommendations. This was a very stereotypical fantasy. Young boy grows up fast after family tragedy, learns he is "the chosen one," has to leave home on a dangerous journey, picks up friends along the way, finds safety with a band of warriors trained for thousands of years just to fight for him. Oh yeah, and he has to find a magic sword.I felt the main character bounced from childlike, naive, to wise-beyond-his-years and back again randomly and the author couldn't make up his mind what kind of character he wanted him to be. The supporting characters felt very flat and 2D, some of them just there to smile, say "i agree" from time to time, and swing a sword or shoot a bow now and then.OK, but not worth reading in my opinion with so many other great, unique fantasies coming out these days. This feels like something that would have been great in the 80's or earlier; in a less developed fantasy genre. Not a series I'm going to be following up with.
