A pretty good start to a fantasy series. The back and forth jumping between the past and present of chapters of Widdershin's life is somewhat confusing in the beginning, but it gets easier to piece together the more you read. After the first two scenes, the beginning is a bit slow, but picks up the pace later on and leads into a great climax and ending. The one thing that bothered me and prevents me from giving this book 5 stars(spoilers!) is the death of a lot of the characters in the end. A couple of the deaths simply seemed unnecessary to me. I'm not sure if this was worth the full three stars, maybe 2.5 stars.This book is CRAZY for jumping all around in time frame. One minute is the present the next is 6 years ago to be followed by 2 years ago, etc. I found that to be distracting, I was able to grab time for reading it in short spurts and then long absences before the next chance to read again. I wouldn't suggest reading this book like I did. It takes away from the story... I think.The life of many gods and their worshipers, thieves, trying to survive, quite a bit of gore within the fight scenes, a wee touch of horror, getting by on your wits, friendship and enemies, aristocracy to street urchins, guilds.
