About book The Year Of Learning Dangerously: Adventures In Homeschooling (2012)
Had this book been in the 'humour' section of the library, instead of the home schooling one, it might have gotten a 3. I thought i was getting a book about how a family home schooled. Probably unschooled, since it had the word 'dangerously' in it, which i took to mean not using a class or curriculum route. Dangerously actually refers to Quinn's infiltrating radical home school groups' conferences. It was funny at first; i laughed my way thru the first few chapters. Then i was waiting for the actual home schooling she did do . But no, more making fun of home schooling groups. I know very little about what she and her daughter did together.So not a book about homeschooling, but a humourous look at the home schooling culture. Which, BTW, is NOT all a radical bunch of religious or anti-government people. This book was alright. It discussed the different models of education in a very easy-to-read way. It was very entertaining at times, but then it crossed the line to slightly offensive. Several times, the author pretended to be someone she is not in order to get a closer look at the different "tribes." Unfortunately, her dialogue came off as making fun of them and viewing herself as superior (even though she admittedly had no idea what she was doing). Yet, at the end she makes the point that none of us can know the right way to educate our own children, it is a decision we all have to make individually. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the book.
