I figured I'd read something a bit lighter, since most of what I've been reading recently is heavy/serious. This was on sale for Nook, and I liked the title, plus it's been a while since I read a cozy mystery.I hadn't read anything from this series before. I guess the premise is that the older lady who owns a BnB always finds dead bodies and then solves the mysteries. Your basic cozy premise, just substitute whatever business the older lady happens to own. This particular episode takes place at an Oktoberfest. It was enjoyable for what it was. I could anticipate a few of the twists, which is fine with me because I wouldn't like a mystery where the reader didn't know the same things as the fictional detective; it's more fair if the author gives you enough info to figure it out for yourself. I had a few problems though, minor quibbles, really. One is that I never knew where this book was supposed to take place. I wasn't sure if it is always ambiguous, or if you are just expected to know from having read the previous books. My eventual guess was Washington State, but I'm still not really sure. Another problem I had, which is kinda universal whenever I read cozies, is that I just didn't think the characters acted that much like 60-70 yr olds. With a few exceptions, most elderly people I know aren't quite that... spunky, I guess?As far as cozies go, this was somewhat less "cozy" than others. I mean obviously there was nothing straight up explicit, but there were a few hells, damns, bitches, etc. Needless to say that didn't bother me but I don't know about the general cozy readership. I really like to read Mary Daheim's books, particularly the Alpine series. Usually, the Bed and Breakfast series is good, too, but this one just wasn't up to par for me. It had an interesting story line but the plot advanced very slowly. One of the fun things about her books are all the recurring characters throughout the series. This one, however, only featured two of the regulars consistently and brought in so many different names and relationships that my head was spinning trying to keep them all straight. Nonetheless, I gave the book 3 stars because I like this writer so much.
