I don't watch any of those talent shows - I've seen an occasional episode of one or the other, but I've never turned the television on for the purpose of watching, and if I've been flicking channels I haven't stayed for more than a couple of minutes. Nevertheless, I heard of Susan Boyle at the time of her phenomenal debut. Still, I didn't follow her other performances and knew nothing more beyond hearing a track from her CD playing somewhere, and a sympathetic comment that a good friend of mine made about her.It was his comment that made me take this book off the shelf when I saw it while browsing the library shelves. I didn't really need any more books to read - I always have a large pile of library books (often several of which I need to renew before I've finished reading), as well as a large pile of books loaned to me by family or friends, as well as all the books on my shelves which I've bought but haven't yet had time to read. So why do I, on occasion, grab extra books from the library?It's probably an addiction.Susan Boyle tells her story frankly and unapologetically. She was a slow child and bullied at school, but much loved by her parents and quite-a-lot older siblings. As a child she also discovered that she loved to act and always participated in school productions, and everybody knew she could sing. She actually competed in local talent quests, and she was well-known at church as a soloist. So she didn't go from singing in the bathroom to Britain's Got Talent, as everyone was saying. Even so, it was a huge thing for her to take that step. She did it with a lot of bravado and a lot of prayer.This book covers her life before BGT - probably in a bit more detail than I was really interested in, though it did build up a good picture of who she is - and then the show itself, and the year following her instant fame. She tells of being crippled by fear, of making foolish decisions (though none terribly life-affecting), and of the sheer pleasure of being loved by fans. I enjoy her honesty, and I'm impressed with her tenacity. A good story. I usually don't read too many autobiographies but for Ms. Boyle I had to make an exception. Like millions of others, I was blown away by her audition on Britain's Got Talent. And like millions around the world, I am truly a fan! Her story is like she is sitting in the room with you and talking to you as if you are a friend she has known for years. I especially enjoyed how Susan does not back off from her religious beliefs. It is so nice to have God and the Virgin Mary spoken of with such love and devotion. This is the second book I have read about her and it is by far my favorite.

Read in 2010. I enjoyed this book. Some parts was somewhat boring. Other that worth the read.
