About book The Wolf In The Parlor: The Eternal Connection Between Humans And Dogs (2009)

I so love this book. Scientific, journalistic, and deeply personal. In searching for the history of how dog and human came to be and what the bond is all about, the author swings wide, and it's all fabulously interesting, and yet he maintains the through line of the story and brings it home at the end in a heartfelt and deeply satisfying way. One gripe, I was deeply disappointed in the author's view of mutt's. We are accountable for shelter dogs as much as for purebreeds. And in my experience, shelter dogs are smart and make amazing family members. The book is very informative and I learnt a lot about dogs and their relationships with human beings. Unfortunately, the author goes on and on making his points. Too many things are repeated. He could have and should have cut down the size of the book by half which would make it lucid and enjoyable read. The author mentions that the relations between man and dog began 12, 000 years ago when the last ice age ended. But, he does not explain why it happened then. He also mentions that at about the same time man lost 10% of his brain volume and dogs lost 20% and claims those two events were interconnected but it appears more to be coincidence than the cause and effect.

Not what I was expecting but still interesting. I think his writing on Shock Trauma may be better.
