I really liked Dorothy Must Die. I enjoyed the first prequel--seeing how Dorothy ended up as the dictator she did was great. I was really looking forward to the next book in the series.This has destroyed my enthusiasm. It didn't add to the narrative in any way that couldn't be incorporated into the larger narrative. I feel like the publisher wanted Paige to put something out and she polished her notes about a secondary character to make it a novella.Disappointing. The fact that the next novel in the series has been pushed back an additional six months, it feels like things are falling apart in Oz. I love these books and am eagerly awaiting the next full sized installment in March 2015.This prequel follows the journey of Jellica, a maid in the Emerald Palace. Jellica has some of her own magic and attracts the attention of Glinda the no-longer-good-witch in Oz. Everyone's done a role reversal in Paige's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Dorothy is now tyrant whose seized power from Ozma the rightful ruler. The Scarecrow has morphed into a disturbing version of Dr. Frankenstein, the Cowardly lion is a bully with an army to back him up and the Tin Woodsman is a fascist. Through Jellica's eyes we see the beginning the resistance movement when the Wicked Witches turn out to be the good guys and the good guys turn out to be psychopaths.I highly recommend this series.
This definitely sets up the next book in the trilogy. And fills in a few blanks from the first.
