About book The Weird Sisters (2011)

I loved this book, and I don't love many books. While it had its flaws -- I felt that Rose's character development was really clunky, for example -- overall, it will stay with me. Perhaps it was because the sisters are around my age, facing similar issues in a general sense, like how to accept the reality of our adult lives with the far-flung expectations from our past looming darkly over us, making us question our happiness and satisfaction with what's in front of us.I thought it also had insightful things to say about family dynamics -- we can become grounded in the labels and roles from our childhood, and only when a big change happens in the family (usually a parent falling ill or aging) can everyone step out of their prescribed roles and be free to become someone different. Or to simply let two opposing sides of their personalities and abilities shine through -- we can all be both responsible Rose and Cordy-like sometimes; we can be both really smart and also ignorant; both outgoing and shy. Parents can be both loving and neglectful. Siblings can be both close and distant/competitive.I loved the writing style of this author. I had recently re-read Little Women, and it reminded me of Louisa May Alcott's style -- sharp, funny descriptions of people and their habits and personalities. There were many, many quotes to jot down and think about later. This book is fraught with ridiculously narcissistic, immature characters. It's a hard read, because the reader cannot slap the crap out of these shallow, self-absorbed woman-children. It takes 300 pages for the characters to develop, and their maturing is sudden and instant, as though the Greek Gods took pity and magically bestowed awareness upon them. Too little too late. Save yourself two days of your life and skip over this read.

Do You like book The Weird Sisters (2011)?

Well written, interesting use of Shakespearean quotes. Not gripping, but nice. Would recommend.

Fun story about three very different sisters. Beware of some language.
