About book The Wealth Cure: Putting Money In Its Place (2011)

I enjoyed reading this book. It was an easy, quick read with an insightful perspective on how we think about what wealth is and how we use money. Hill gives some great introductory tips on money management: creating a smart money contract, tracking spending as "necessities" vs "unnecessary expenditures", and thinking about how you felt you were spending money (a great discussion on emotional spending). I think this would be a great present for a young adult planning for college or getting ready to graduate. The book really helps you think about the value we have placed on money instead of how we can use money as a tool to fuel our passion and sustain our health. I discovered this author and book when the Danville Regional Foundation approached PCC about participating in a community read leading up to the author's Danville speaking engagement in April 2012. I was amazed to discover that the author acts in one of my favorite TV series, CSI: NY, but also spends much time motivating young people in positive life conduct (see his earlier works Letters to a Young Brother/Sister). With our current emphasis on financial literacy, The Wealth Cure is a great fit for us and will become the basis of class assignments, book clubs, panel discussions, and other activities being designed for 2011-12. The highloght is the authors visit to this area where many of our students will meet him and hear him speak. Personally, the book was too rambling for my tastes and I never finished it, but then, I don't think I fit the author's intended audience. I'm glad it worked well for our students, and I still love Hill Harper on TV.
