About book The Watchman's Rattle: A New Way To Understand Complexity, Collapse, And Correction (2010)

Overall, this book is a great and easy read. I recommend it to everyone. To paraphrase Rebecca Costa, she tackled an enormous subject for her first book. I found her root cause analysis of the cognitive threshold and complexity issue to be very compelling. Balancing the depth of technical information with the breadth of the topic is tricky when writing for a general audience. Mostly she accomplishes this, however, I was a little disappointed in the brevity of the concluding recommendations; perhaps a little more here or a sequel would be helpful. I found this systemic approach to why our civilization is threatened, generative, interesting and it made me think a whole new bunch of thoughts. What more could I want? Well there were parts that could have been better written but I have been spoiled lately by folks like Nate Silver and David Brooks who write like a dream and have stellar clarity. Anyway if you want to know why societies collapse when there complexity exceeds that of the people and culture that inhabits said society this is the book for you.
