It's been a while since I finished Vol. 19 and this volume makes it easy to get back into the story.The first part of "All Out War" is less an escalation of war, but rather a series of jabs. Most of the jabs have weight, only a few (mainly the flashback) didn't land (which is especially sad as the flashback involves an unconventional character, from which I had some expectations). Thus, it made for a brisk read. I do feel that there are too many characters now and remembering their background, motivations and caring about all of them is a stretch. Not a single character development in is this volume - too many changes of scene and people.I hope Part 2 will improve on this. I will get to it immediately. This latest installment felt short and a bit rush toward the end. However, I did like the straight-up massacres running amok throughout this volume. I did think Negan confusing Holly with Andrea was contrived but he turned it around with how he used her to get back at Rick. That brings me to Rick's plan: it was pretty smart but it left a lot to chance. I felt that there were too many cliffhangers. I felt like I was watching the season finale of The Walking Dead. To be honest, I was never the biggest fan of this series, both the graphic novels and the show. However, I have admired Kirkman for the choices, i.e. character deaths, characters missing limbs, with that being said, All Out War felt a bit anticlimatic.I really loved the characterizations of Michonne and Maggie, especially the latter, she was a badass! I feel that Kirkman is setting up Rick to either be the Lone Survivor or the Martyr.
