This volume was just ok. Maybe the 1-month wait for the library copy affected my enthusiasm, but then I just never made it a priority and left it lying around for another month. When I did start reading, I felt disconnected and disinterested. The flashbacks were informative but not fun, and I had a hard time reading the 'old-timey handwriting' at times, here and mostly in other volumes (Wilson Taylor journals especially). I appreciate finally getting some answers in this volume, and the ending was a surprise to me. It managed to make me interested again where I hadn't been planning to follow through anymore. Mostly because now I'm confused again, not so much because I loved it and can't wait for more. I did appreciate that there was no 'Mr. Bun-Bun' segment. This is one of the strongest volumes yet. These books keep getting better and better. However, that being said, where this one leaves off, I do worry, slightly, about the direction of the rest of the series. But I suppose I don't have to wonder or worry long, seeing as Volume Seven comes out in a few days from this writing...I love how this one weaves the current with the past, building up and finally explaining so much of the mystery to these books. And even with everything finally making some sort of sense, in its own way of course, it's still intriguing and something that keeps you thinking about it long after it's finished. Truly, there is all sorts of literary and philosophical fodder in these things, and if you're not reading them yet, then do yourself a favor, start them, and be sure you read through, at least, volume three before you give up. What is even better about this volume is that the artwork is much, much better. Its been my only qualm with this series thus far, as the art works, but hasn't been anything to brag about. But in this volume, with the guest artists and the "assists" on the other pages, there is more style, more depth, and more darkness to this tale. To me, the art is finally starting to live up to the quality of the writing.But, whether or not you like the art doesn't matter for this series. Normally, if I don't like the art, I'll give up on a book. The Unwritten, though, is too, too good to put down. I only hope that Carey and Gross don't run it into the ground and ensure that it ends on a high note, giving it that comic fame and placing it in the ranks of the best--as so many have already put it.
