About book The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - And Why (2008)
This was book was pretty great. Some parts of it were so emotional, I almost teared up. But all of it was interesting. The stories about heroes were amazing, and I found myself unable to stop. Especially the stories about heroes at the Trade Center Towers during 9/11. The focus on the evolutionary development of our disaster reactions weren't as interesting to me, but all the stories she wove into her narrative were great. I would recommend this book and plan to read it again to make sure I picked up all the advice I can. I can tell you this, I will be taking the stairs much more. ;) Excellent book! This book is not simply a retelling of disasters even though it covers many starting from the early 1900's including the Beverly Hills supper club fire, tsunamis, car crashes, 9/11, Air Florida 90 and many other. Instead this book is a clear and informative look at how the human brain/body functions during such events. Knowing ahead of time what your brain/body will do (and not do) during stressful situations makes this a very useful read even if you never experience such devastation. With analysis from the best researchers on how the mind handles stress such as Lt. Col. Grossman, Bruce Siddle, Massad Ayoob, Jim Cerillo it give you insight that will prepare you for the worst case or simply allow you to better handle the everyday situations which can tax your mental facilities at work, home or where ever you find yourself outside of a 'normal' situation.Get it, read it, save your life or others.
