This is a down-to-earth piece of historical fiction about a young woman and the three men that want her. Occurring in the 1920s, it is the story of nineteen-year old orphan Hallie Meredith trying to make ends meet while taking care of her younger half-brother Jackie. Eventually, she is hired on to help the cook while working for a threshing crew. Over the course of days that turn into weeks, then months, the crew becomes her family. Day-to-day hardships become a reality but also make her a stronger person. Two men become somewhat obsessed with her but the one she wants the most keeps his distance. Both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, this light romance keeps throwing the reader curveballs. There are many historical references weaved within the storyline. Those that will love this story the most will appreciate a clean romance with a strong dose of political history. Where else can you find a kitten living in a guy's beard?
