His writing is so true to life and there were moments where i was nodding in agreement with the main character, Steve C. Mcqueen (no relation to the famous one!) because i’d been in the same situation and thought exactly the same things whilst reacting the same way. It’s set in a very familiar setting, The West End, and in a business I know enough about to sympathize with a character that just has no luck whatsoever. So much so he is reduced to playing furry animals in a kid’s TV Show. Whilst reading this book in public, I acquired a few funny looks when I blurted out a snort of laughter at Nicholls’ funny lines and witty characters. I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Understudy’ and i’ve already started raving about it to friends!
Do You like book The Understudy (2007)?
I bought this book because I loved Starter for Ten - it made me laugh and cry in equal measure. In comparison The Understudy was a huge disappointment. I didn't laugh out loud once, despite the 'laugh out loud' quote from the Daily Mail on the front cover and the 'funniest book of the year' quote from Marie Claire on the back. Not only was it not particularly funny, I also found it difficult to feel sympathy for Stephen C McQueen or any other character. I found Stephen frustrating and his constant whining and complaining about how terrible his life had become was grating. Put simply, it was a bit depressing and left me feeling empty - surely that can't have been David Nicholls' intention when writing the book? The good thing about this book though is its realism. This is something that Nicholls always does well. He manages to paint amazingly bleak yet realistic pictures of daily life for normal people struggling with their mundane lives and I like the way he employs subtle cynicism. I also enjoyed his descriptions of London because they're not picture-perfect, they're seen through the eyes of a real Londoner trying to make it big in the city.This is a good read if you want something light and easy but don't expect to feel uplifted or fulfilled by the end of it. As my two star rating suggests, it was ok, just like Stephen C McQueen...

Good solid story-telling. Problem was, I had a hard time feeling sympathy for the narrator, who has a habit of lying whenever he thinks the truth will put him in an unflattering light. Worse, he blames "bad luck" for why he's such a sad sack, and has few redeeming characteristics otherwise. Some of the jokes and set-pieces were entirely too commonplace to be truly funny, and I thought it awfully convenient that he should walk into Number Twelve's dressing room that one scene, thereby finding a reason to absolve himself of guilt over being in love with the man's wife. Towards the end, he definitely proved himself a better person through his conduct towards Nora, and I did like how the ending wasn't as predictable as certain other parts of the book were. I did love how the book captured the pain of being a struggling actor. Overall, a good, if not life-changing, read.

Maybe it's the books I've been choosing lately, but I'm noticing a common thread between them all: inconsistently weak main characters.This is my second David Nicholls' book. And with both of his stories, the main character (male) does shady things that end up sorely hurting him in the end...shady things that are transpired, it seems, by their insecurities.It's kind of hard to read a book where you don't much like the protagonist...unless you're Tom Perrotta, because there's rarely a character you like in his books. And that's just his style, and I love it. But this is different; I feel like I was SUPPOSED to like Stephen (the protagonist) and feel like there was justification in the things he does. There are so many parts of the book where Stephen's awkwardness makes me squirm; but just because I'm squirming doesn't mean that my pity card is being put on the table. I really would like him to write from the perspective of a character who isn't a loser...! Which also makes Stephen's sudden gruff, spiteful mannerisms toward the end, well, not believable.Also, another gripe: like "Starter for Ten", his previous book, the end of "The Understudy" had no real conclusion. I don't need a map to figure out what the author wants to happen, but maybe a tiny bit of direction?...However, those being said...I will still read another David Nicholls' book. I really like his writing style--he's clever and brutal at the same time. The plot was good. The backstories of the other characters were good. I think he just needs more range and he'll be wonderful. So, two stars.
