REVIEW: The Thousand Names (The Shadow Campaigns) by Django Wexler The first two thirds of the book is basically military fantasy similar in the vein of the Malazan books and the Monarchies of God series. Then things move up towards the 'magic' part, which, unfortunately, struck me as weaker for some reason. The writing style is solid enough, but the plot was a bit thin. It was basically setpiece after setpiece, and the one 'twist' at the end wasn't much of a twist if you have any familiarity with books like these. Final verdict:Solid enough to try the next book in the series and see if the plotting improves. If you liked the books I mentioned above, you'll like this. A wonderful start to a promising series! The Thousand Names is a great read that kept me captivated to the end. Full of action and intrigue each chapter seems to capitalize on the points of each character. Oddly humorous at times, each page seems to fly past as you get lost in the story. Some parts seemed rougher than others but each character seemed flushed out and full of depth, the only problem being that you want to know more about them. It is obvious which characters we are supposed to hate and the author, Django Wexler, does a masterful job making them so distasteful. The biggest problem with this though was that, except for captain Adrecht, had no redeemable qualities at all which made them seem almost bland in comparison to the other characters. The most amazing aspect of the story though was the seeming helplessness or weakness of the main characters at times. While each had areas where they obviously excelled at no point was any of them doing amazing feats that seemed impossible but all seemed truly human in moments of weakness and worry. A wonderful story that makes we want more, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next volume of the shadow campaigns!
