This book is not really that amazing. However, there is one scenes in this book that is just worth buying the book so you can read it. It's just one of those books that your like yeah, yeah, and then suddenly shouting what? This is fantastic, and then that moment is over, and you back to saying yeah, yeah.The epic scene in Ten Thousand is when the army has been crushed, the troops are exhausted, and their chips are down, yet they go up swinging and singing. In a brilliant display of power and military discipline. Yep, it's awesome. Beside that, just say yeah, yeah for the rest of the book, or in fact the whole book. Tough one to review. As noted elsewhere, this is an adaptation of "The Ten Thousand", or the Anabasis, by Xenophon. A lot of people like this book, and I didn't hate it, but I didn't fall in love with it either. I found there was too little character development and the setting on an alien planet just served as a distraction for me from the tale. I kept waiting for a revelation that would justify the setting, but despite hints at such, there was nothing. To be honest, there is little character development in the original, but there were no alien planet distractions either, and I do love the original. Despite not being able to fully get behind this book and cheer it on, I'm still thinking about reading the sequel...maybe it will tell me what is going on with the alien planet.
