About book The Talent Code: Unlocking The Secret Of Skill In Sports, Art, Music, Math, And Just About Everything Else (2009)

Incredible read, brilliantly put together."When I visited the talent hotbeds, I didn't find many Lombardis or Pattons, or Queen Elizabeths for that matter. Instead, the teachers and coaches I met were quiet, even reserved. They were mostly older; many had been teaching 30 or 40 years. They possessed the same sort of gaze: steady, deep, unblinking.. They listened far more than they talked. They seemed allergic to giving pep talks or inspiring speeches; they spent most of their time offering small, targeted, highly-specific adjustments. They had an extraordinary sensitivity to the person they were teaching, customizing each message to the student's personality.""Coaching is a long, intimate conversation, a series of signals andf repsonses that move toward a shared goal. A coach's true skill consists not in some universally applicable wisdon that he can communicate to all, but rather in the supple ability to locate that sweet spot on the edge of each individual student's ability, and to send the right signals to help the student reach toward the right goal, over and over." This book took a fresh look at many of the same studies that Malcolm Gladwell reviewed in Outliers and also the book "Talent is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin (which I don't believe I finished) but Coyle takes a fresh look on these topics and studies a few important and new concepts, such as Myelin.Myelin is the insulation that wraps around nerve fibers. According to Coyle, myelin turns out to become strengthened during the development of a skill. Myelin is increased through repetition, in turn, increased myelin affects the signal strength, speed and accuracy of the electric signals traveling through nerve fibers. Great performers, according to Coyle, have increased myelin. There are three things that develop myelin fibers: (1) "deep practice" or correct repetition; (2) motivation; and (3) master coaching.

Read most of the book. Enough to get a full understanding how Myelin works in deep practicing.

"Myelin Beings" This book pretty much changed my whole philosophy on training.

Good, but ultimately uninspiring. Read an article about the concept instead.
