About book The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode, Vol. 1 (2012)

It's hard not to compare this tittle with Kick-Ass at times. They are both about teenage comic book nerds who become the heroes themselves and both titles deal with the idea of hyperactive violence. However, Kick-ass takes the situation into a dark comedy route and Luther Strode, which has a little comedy, focuses on the drama aspect. As much as I liked Kick-Ass (mainly for the characters), I think I like Luther Strode better cause to me it seem more believable. There was no "get the girl" story line because Petra already liked him before he got "super". Also, the villain did just want Luther, but everyone Luther knew and loved.Probably the two biggest aspects that stood out for me in this book was the art and the idea of "working out". As a comic book reader who loves to workout, Luther Strode is what you would want in an everyday hero. He was skinny and turned to a buff guy and unlike most comics, I feel the writer actually researched stuff about bodybuilding and exercise. "The key to the Hercules Method is to focus your mind, body and spirit towards one goal. By bringing all three into alignment, the physical enthusiast can bring all of them under conscious control. Such control is the key to change." Now I may not be as big as Luther nor a superhero, but focusing on your mind, body, and spirit is a huge part of bodybuilding that most people tend to forget about. The other part I really liked about this comic was the art and even the coloring. Well done and fits well with it all. Maybe I like the artist because I was literally born the day before him or just the fact he knows how to draw really cool bros. Either way the art stood out for me or I really liked it. Plus, he knew how to draw some nice fighting scenes as well.If you don't mine over the top violence in a comic book and need a hero who rather has a little extra punch to him, then Luther Strode is highly recommended. I'm giving this graphic novel two stars not because I thought it was bad or had an uninteresting plot, but rather because I did not enjoy it. It was nothing I didn't expect, but I am just not a fan of ultraviolence, which is larger what this is. It has a great story, but I am just not the target audience here. Edit: I'm changing my review to three stars. Once I got past the gore this is a pretty awesome comic.
