About book The Story Of Stuff: How Our Obsession With Stuff Is Trashing The Planet, Our Communities, And Our Health—and A Vision For Change (2010)
This book addresses a very important and hidden topic, and Annie Leonard does it very well. I was already heading this direction, but will be implementing some changes to my own lifestyle as a result of this book, and then looking for more community -based ways to get involved with reducing the amount of stuff and waste around here.Oh also, much of my reading of this book was done in and around airports - the consumerism present there can get pretty depressing when you are reading the book. Maybe take it outside to a park instead :). I remember in 5th grade when we watched a short clip of the book "the Story of Stuff" on Earth Day. The clip included a sketch of what human beings did to "ruin" our planet. After watching this five minute video, I decided to learn more about it, so I bought this book. I was too young to understand what the story was talking about when I was in 5th grade, so I decided to come back to it, thinking that I would now be able to understand what the book was about. Although the book confused me in some places, I was able to figure out that the book had several sections on what we, humans, are doing. The story describes the entire procedure of what we do, starting from chopping down trees, to being sent to factories, sold at stores, brought to our houses, and thrown away later on. Extraction. With human beings taking down all of these natural resources, we are bound to run out of these materials. Production. Human-beings use machines that are bad for the environment to create items that aren't good for Earth either. Consumption. We purchase things for high prices, and then throw them away, even when it's perfectly fine. Disposal. Although some products can be "recycled", not all products that we throw away can be reused or recycled. In addition, the author has little drawings in the corner of the page, to help the reader understand the subject better.
