About book The Stillness Of You (2000)

As someone who works in mental health, I appreciate Julie Bale's effort to write a character who is living with mental illness. Much like people I meet on a daily basis, Georgia struggles with her bi-polar. She both accepts and resents the fact that she has to take lithium and klonopin. Georgia isn't able to embrace her diagnosis, so why would she think anyone else would? We see the ups and downs that Ben and Georgia face that almost mimic that of the manic and depressive episodes people with bi-polar often experience. Through it all Ben is determined to show Georgia how much she means to him, but first Georgia must prove how much she means to herself. I read this - devoured it is more like it - in half a day. It hooked me from the start. The romance/sex scenes really did leave me breathless at times. :) Why, then, the three stars and not more? It's because I wanted more - not at the ending as a few other reviewers suggested. I actually thought the ending was great. I wanted more at the beginning and throughout several sections. I felt as if this was a summary of a great, detailed, thoughtful novel, but I didn't feel I was really brought IN to the story. I didn't feel like I got the entire story. I was told many times what the character was like, but I didn't feel I every really got to see it. Every once in a while there was a hint of a conversation between the two characters that illustrated part of why they loved each other, but I never got to see the conversation. The memory scene of her mother was a great and rare example of what I was really longing for - rawness and honesty. This was a great story, but it could have been so much more. However, if you want a fast, really good read, then this is a fantastic book for you.
