About book The Spirit Keeper: A Novel (2013)

Excellent story of early America exploration, hardships, Indian culture? And love. Wow, a real love story, not just the typical romance. At first I thought the main character's voice was shallow, but as the character grew in self confidence, so did the prose, until I was literally gripping my kindle tightly while reaching for tissues! I really really hope the author turns this book into a series, or at the least writes a sequel because there is much story left to be told!! Compelling and different story elevates this frontier romance above most. Red-haired Katie O'Toole is kidnapped by Indians of an unnamed tribe from her home in Pennsylvania; veteran of all kinds of familial and sexual abuse, Katie finds captivity to be a relief and is glad to be free of her vicious mother. She travels with Syawa and Hector, her captors, to the Mississippi River and then the Missouri River; along the way, her hero, Syawa, a medicine man or seer, is bitten by a rattlesnake and dies. Katie and Hector, after numerous adventures, marry and continue the journey. Hector and Syawa seem to be from a tribe of Columbian Indians, although that is never stated. Along the way, Katie forgives both herself and her mother.
