Diane Noble is an amazing author, but I'm still on the fence about this book. I loved the initial relationship between the main character and her husband, but that all goes so far south. I would have enjoyed the book more had she shot her husband, as Cordelia mentions, at the first mention of plural marriage. While the book is very well written, interesting, and could hardly stand to be put down, I don't think I can bear to read a second novel based around the women's heartbreaking lives. The characters dilemmas and heartaches are so very true to life, and so honest - I really felt for all of them. I do wonder when Mary Rose's iron spine will return... so once the series is complete, I may read all of the books... as long as I find out that Mary Rose is upheld in the end. A family member recommended this book to me. It was written by a woman who is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but who writes about the polygamy practices of the early church. Technically, I didn't really care for the flow of the book. It dragged in parts and halfway into the book I found myself thinking... "When is it going to get to the point?" But, beyond the technical, I found myself uncomfortable with the portrayal of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and other early leaders of the church. It gets into quite a bit of detail about the realities of polygamy, but at some points I found myself thinking, "Surely, that can't be how it really happened." So, for anyone out there who might read my review... I didn't really like this book and wouldn't really recommend it.
